Algebra: Factors and Terms

This is a simple application that visualizes the relationship between the terms and factors in an algebraic expression involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Click on any of the samples below to see how it works. Multiple equations can be entered, separated by semicolons.

The motivation is to aide algebra students in understanding which elements in an equation can be moved from one side to the other by adding/subtracting/dividing/multiplying both sides by that element. When the equation is viewed in this application, the elements that can be moved are the ones enclosed by the outermost boxes.

(-7x+4)/ab = 12x/k(5+y/7)
a+b=10
9a/(a+b+c)-a+b+c/9a = w+x+y+z
